Cornerman Review: Pros & Cons
Pros
- Steel Tube Construction – The Cornerman is built from round steel tubing that bolts together, forming a secure structure. Each leg has rubber feet to minimize vibration and noise from the stand.
- Wide Stable Base – The base is what sets the Cornerman apart from the rest. With 7-1/2 foot long legs, the stand is far more stable than any other punching bag stand you’ll find. The extra-wide base distributes the weight of the bag better, as well as the impact of heavy punches and kicks.
- 30″ of Height Adjustment – The bag hanger portion of the stand has 30 inches of adjustments, with 6 pin locations for bag heights ranging from 72 to 102 inches. Why is cool? Because now you can use longer Muay Thai heavy bags or lower it if you’re a little shorter.
- Room to Move Around – With the wide base and corner design, you are no longer limited to straight-ahead punching. You can work the bag 180 degrees around to work on footwork, combinations, kicks, and more. The variety of the moves you can make are simply not possible on basic punching bag stands.
- Straightforward Assembly – While this is a large stand, the tubing construction means assembly can be done by one person. Multiple owners have stated this fact. The only assistance you may need is when it’s time to hang a 100lb punching bag.
- Quiet Stand – The rubber feet and wide base help minimize any creaking when hitting the bag. There may be some sounds from the hanging arm, but that is normal when hanging a punching bag with hooks and chains.
- Versatility – The wide base and adjustable height make the Cornerman versatile and compatible with many types of punching bags. The stand works Great with traditional heavy bags, banana bags, wrecking balls, and more.
- Great Utilization of Space – The Cornerman is optimized to be placed in the corner of rooms which are typically unused or wasted space in home gyms. It does take more space than other punching bag stands, but space is better utilized.
- 100lb Punching Bag Capacity – With lesser bag stands you are limited to 80lb punching bags. With the Century Cornerman, you can go up to 100lbs (or more according to some users, but be careful as Century states a 100lbs limit).
Cons
- Requires Floor Space – To achieve a stable base for up to 100lb punching bags, the Cornerman requires some space. The legs reach 7-1/2 feet long so you’ll need an entire corner dedicated to the stand. The good thing is corners are underutilized in many home gyms, so get creative and clear out a corner.
- Need High Ceilings – The center tubing assembly is adjustable for setting the bag height, up to 102 inches. If you have a basement with 7-foot ceilings you won’t be able to utilize the highest settings. 8-10 foot ceilings are perfect.
- Stand Sway – As large as this stand is there can still be some stand sway and this is normal. Hard strikes and kicks will cause any stand to move, the only way to avoid this is to hang a bag from a ceiling joist or the wall, which is not an option for many people.
- Price – One of the hardest things to swallow is the price of the Cornerman. At an MSRP of $550, this is the most expensive heavy bag stand on the market. The Cornerman does, however, have the size and stability that no other stand can offer.
Cornerman Assembly Instructions & Setup Tips
Assembly of the Cornerman can be handled by one person, but having a friend or family member assist you will make the process go smoother. The frame is all steel tubing that slips into each other and is connected by bolts. No special tools or equipment is required.
Here are some more setup tips you might find useful:
- Use rubber gym flooring underneath the stand if possible to reduce the wear and tear on your flooring. Rubber also dampens vibration and noise while you are giving the punching bag a workout.
- The weight of any punching bag will cause the hanging arm to sag a little from where it sits unloaded. Simply hang your heavy bag one ring higher if you see some sag in the overhead tubing arm.
- Should you have any creaking in the frame while working out with the punching bag, try stuffing pool noodle foam sections inside the tubes to dampen any noise.
- The heavy bag hangs from the frame with a hook and pin. When hitting the bag these parts move against the frame and can be quite squeaky. Try wrapping the hook pin with heavy-duty tape to reduce rubbing noise and wear on the components.
- Use a heavy bag spring to reduce frame stress. The spring is installed between the heavy bag chain and the Cornerman mount. This reduces the amount of vibration and annoying noises that can occur on any heavy bag stand.
